Brainwave Tracking: Portable Imaging and Relaxation

There is an exciting new movement in the Mindfulness and Stress-Management arenas!  It includes the ability to use technology to train your brain.

This brain-training is accomplished by a variety of devices.  One of these is the MUSE-EEG.  This device actually allows you to see how your brain operates!  It allows you to use on-the-move biofeedback to become aware of your specific level of physical arousal and your fluctuating brainwave state.

Then, through the “magic” of electronics, you can begin to use relaxation to reduce stress and increase your level of well-being.  You can check it out at the MUSE-EEG website … and see for yourself!

The Muse brain-sensing headband is basically a high-tech device that allows you to get more relaxed through the process of reading your mind! Or — to be more exact — the Muse uses a mobile-phone app to guide you to deeper and deeper relaxation by reading your brainwaves, graphing your brainwave state, and evaluating your results!

To do this, the Muse uses electronic sensors that are attached to a headband. You position the headband on your forehead and it extends behind your ears.. When you put it around your head, the headband is actually able to read your brainwaves. As a result, the device is able to tell you how focused you are.

So, why is it useful to know how focused you are? Basically, it’s really good for relaxation and meditation — because, as you relax more deeply into meditation, you become more de-focused. The Muse is able to detect this as changes in your brainwave state.

Here’s what one user had to say:

The Muse headband comes with “this cool smartphone app and the app is an amazing experience!  It uses shifting sound patterns to tell you what your mind is doing. So, you’re sitting there meditating with your eyes closed — or however you like to sit and meditate — and, as you get really relaxed, it will broadcast a super-calm sound like birds chirping or wind chimes chiming. If you get a little agitated — if your mind starts to wander — the app will play more dissonant, unpleasant sounds like waves crashing or traffic honking.

“The first thing that I thought to do when I open the Muse and started using it was to see if it actually responded to my state of mind because it’s pretty amazing to me that we’re at a point where you can buy technology that can actually read your mind! So, I wanted to see it happen in real time.

“It was actually really cool, because it’s amazing to experience technology that can actually tell you what your brain is doing via a smartphone app. Once I got it to work properly, and once I could tell that it was actually responding to my state of mind, it actually did allow me to get really relaxed really quickly

“It can be a great device to help you get meditating, get relaxed really quickly, and get the most out of your relaxation time in just a few minutes. You can go from being totally scattered to totally calm just based on these shifting sound patterns.

“If you’re someone who’s busy, maybe you have a really hectic work life, or if you’ve got kids, and you don’t have that much time, this may be the perfect product for you. If you want to meditate, you want to do it quickly, you want to get down to business, this may be the right product for you.”
