Because we are social beings, relationships are very important — both to create and to maintain.  Below are 5 Keys for Keeping Your Friendships Strong … or, 5 Keys for Making Strong Friendships!

Key #1:  Extend Yourself
Be the friend that you’d most want to have.  To do so, take care not to wait for the other person to make the first move.  Go ahead!  Think about your friends … and, then, let them know by staying in touch and initiating plans with them.

Key #2:  Remember Your Friend … just Because!
Do you find it nice to have someone remember you?  Do you enjoy it when a friend calls or writes to say that s/he were thinking about you?  Well, it is just as nice for your friend to receive these advances from you!  Think about it — Who you can reach out and “touch” today?  Who can you contact to let them know they are special to you.

Key #3:  Have Value to Offer

Again, don’t wait for your friend to make the first move.  Offer your time, energy, thought …

— share your skills and interests

— volunteer your time and talents

— find out what others need … offer to help

Key #4:  Be Interesting … Have a Good Time!!
Take time to have interests.  When you talk about these interests, you become interesting to others.  Focus on enjoying those interests!  Being around someone who is having fun is contageous!  The act of enjoying yourself can attract people to you!

Key #5:  Keep Confidences
One of the best ways to keep friends is to be trustworthy with secrets and personal information.  Even if your friend does not say to keep an important fact confidential, you will be doing yourself — and your friend — an immense favor to keep it just between the two of you.
