Setting a goal or selecting a New Year’s resolution can be a powerful and motivational tool.  At the same time, this can become a downfall for many people.  It is so important to set and approach your resolution or goal correctly.

The Life Coach Dr. for Resolution & Goal Success! One common pitfall is beginning a resolution or goal when your mind is not ready for it. If you are the type of person who makes the same resolution/goal each year, you need to understand why you are not achieving it. This applies as well to people who are trying to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.

It can be very easy to make a New Year’s Resolution or choose a goal.  However, it is important to follow through with it. For example if you are not motivated enough to lose weight, don’t just make a to lose 10 pounds by Spring. Instead, take a deep look inside yourself and uncover your true feelings about losing weight.

Some self-awareness questions you might ask yourself preparatory to losing weight are:

  1. Why do I want to lose weight?  Why is this important to me?
  2. Why have my past attempts met with failure?
  3. What are the benefits that I’m looking for from losing weight?
  4. What are the obstacles I’ll have to overcome in order to experience complete success?
  5. What is an initial realistic goal for me? — e.g., losing a pound this week.
  6. How do I think my life will be better once I’ve lost weight?

This can be an extremely difficult exercise to do. It requires being honest with yourself. It can open up some very unexpected emotions. If you follow any of the weight loss shows on television, you will have seen this played out many times.

Basically, what this boils down to is that it is essential that you make a New Year’s Resolution or set a goal which is right for you. Don’t base your resolution on what other people are telling you, for example, that you should lose 10 or 20 pounds. Select for yourself the goal or Resolution that is meaningful for you.

Your resolution really has to have a powerful meaning for you! If you take steps because you feel pressured to do so, the end result could actually damage you as opposed to helping you.
