Tip #8: Steps to Change Negative Self-Talk (Part I)
Filed Under Emotional Healing, Mental Healing, Physical Healing, Spiritual Healing
How did you do with Tip #7? As a reminder, it is: Notice Your Self-Talk.
What did you discover from keeping the record of your Self-Talk this week? I would like you to take out the notes that you recorded this week.
Now we’ll proceed with Tip #8: Steps to Change Negative Self-Talk (Part I). Look over your notes. When did you find that your Self-Talk was most negative? When did you find that your Self-Talk was most positive? What made the difference? How did you feel in each situation?
Be objective now. Begin to look over your list of Self-Talk examples. What do you notice? Do any of the entries surprise you?
Now make a separate list of all of the positive thoughts that you have recorded. Just recopy the POSITIVE Self-Talk that you have noted.
Give yourself a “pat on the back” — literally — for each positive thought about you! Accompany that with a compliment that is especially meaningful to you; for example, “I am really proud of you, (your name), for being so positive about yourself!”
How does it feel to acknowledge yourself for being positive about you? Yes, it might feel good-strange. “Good” because acknowledgement is one of our fundamental emotional needs … and, by patting yourself of the back, you are taking a direct step toward meeting that need. “Strange” because, possibly, you are not used to doing this for yourself.
When we do something new, it is normal that it would feel strange initially. However, this feeling of strangeness rapidly vanishes as we continue to apply the action. Then, the new behavior is the one that starts to feel normal!
I encourage you to continue to follow-through in this way during the upcoming week. Notice how you feel when you do so!
